The K-2 Approach to Editing:

Conrad Anker, one of the world’s most accomplished high-altitude climbers, claims “enlightenment isn’t found on a full stomach, or on a soft pillow.” Based on this philosophy, award-winning poets Kevin Goodan and Kimberly Burwick offer multiple packages to help heighten your sense of risk and polish your technical skills as you ascend to the peak of your talent. Our goal is not to simply guide your manuscript toward completion, but rather to help you engage the kind of language that is heart-stopping, unexpected, full of the gravity of the moment – poetry that is lasting. We will help you walk away with a manuscript that is ready for publication in this competitive climate of poetry contests and submission saturation. What’s different about K-2 Editing is that you get feedback from two poets – double the perspective! All prices are based on our hourly rate of $75.00 per hour.

Package 1: Base Camp - The Full Manuscript Assessment ($450 – estimated 6 hrs)

This option includes a brief read-through of your full-length poetry manuscript, one half-hour phone call or Skype session, and two pages of feedback. You’ll have the choice of focusing on two of the following aspects:
  • Ordering
  • Highlighting your ten strongest and weakest poems
  • Possible venues for publication
  • Recommendations for editing (we will assess if you’ll need heavy or light edits as you move forward)

Package 2: The South East Ridge – The Chapbook Edit ($600 – estimated 8 hrs)

In this option, we will consider up to twenty-five pages of work. Each of us will do a thorough read-through of your manuscript and provide two to three pages of specific feedback including
  • Line edits on each poem
  • Ordering
  • Fleshing out anchor points (assessment of what holds the manuscript together)
  • Exposure (how much one risks in each poem)
  • Tension (the degree to which images are balanced within the lyric and/or narrative)
This package also includes a half-hour phone call or Skype session.

Package 3: The South West Pillar — or “the magic line” as climbers call it! ($1,650 – an estimated 22 hrs) * add $150 if your ms. exceeds this length

*Note: if you chose this option after completing Package 2, we will deduct $225 from this price.
This option is what we deem “the full climb”. We will read your manuscript of 48-65 pages and make highly specific suggestions, including two 45-minute phone calls or skype sessions, 4-5 pages of feedback that includes all of the following:
  • Line edits
  • Ordering
  • Fleshing out anchor points (assessment of what holds the manuscript together)
  • Exposure (how much one risks in each poem)
  • Tension (the degree to which images are balanced within the lyric and/or narrative)
  • Possible venues for publication
  • Advice about interacting with your publisher
  • Marketing your book
